Two centuries ago, the life of the vampire was far from glamorous.  To walk among the undead was a crippling curse wrought with never ending torment for those infected.  Mind and body alike would digress to create an abomination that could be likened only to the rats, the snakes, and the lowest forms of life on the planet.

Nosferatu currently haunts the New Orleans mansion of vampire novelist Anne Rice, who commissioned its creation.

Blackwater Hattie lived back in the swamps, where the strange green reptiles crawl, where the snakes hang thick from the cypress trees, like sausage on a smokehouse wall…rumors of what she’d done and rumors of what she’d do, kept folks off the track of Hattie’s shack, in the back of the Black Bayou…

Sculpture inspired by Jim Stafford’s “Swamp Witch."  Lyrics are copyright 1974 MGM Records.  All rights reserved.

The thespian narrator of nightmares, his leering smile has the same effect as a spider’s venom…creating the paralysis familiar to such somnambulistic performances.

Liquid courage he calls it, the power to do the things you’re afraid to try and to say the things you’ve been wanting to say. And, when you sing you sound like an angel to your own ears. Let the warmth rush in and slowly turn control of your will over to him. Enjoy it, because tomorrow you’ll need him again. In fact, you may find that once you’ve swallowed him, your courage turns to fear and you can’t live without him.

Keeper of the ancient tribal wisdom, he has become frustrated in his efforts to pass on his knowledge, for the youth of his tribe seem more interested in the wants and needs of a decadent and selfish world. What saddens elder Gray Owl most of all is that his cumulative knowledge would have been most useful to his people in these times.

In the deepest reaches of the swamp, where the mosquitoes are so thick and hungry they could incite madness in mere hours, there are many unseen presences who look after the lost traveler and quell the demons of the bog long enough to allow safe passage.  But if the traveler has a malevolent heart, the Bog Shaman will leave him to the mercy of the swamp or, in some cases, hasten his demise.

Part of the peaceful, nomadic tribe that wanders the wasteland of what was once a modern, high-tech civilization, Etosh the medicine man has the ability not only to heal, but to guide his people through the dangerous legacy of the world's former masters.  He has spiritual knowledge and magic that can be used only for survival.  To abuse it costs its privilege, leaving Etosh and his people at the mercy of a cruel and mysterious environment.

A wizard with special talents in communication with the dead, this grizzled hermit dwelled in a forest cave on the outskirts of the village.  Townsfolk would seek him out if the advice of an ancestor was needed, but not without a price: For each person, the barter took different form, depending on the talents, aspirations, and possessions of those who sought the service of the Necromancer.

To seek out Zoga and benefit from her wisdom, one must traverse a jungle and face one's deepest fears.  Some go mad.  Some perish altogether.  But those who find the Oracle become enlightened to the true meaning of their own lives.
